Brief
Introduction
One of the identifying elements of the Internet is its chaotic make-up of
networked computers. Another aspect is its ‘organic’ growth and
continuous expansion. However, the dominant descriptive factor is its non-human
quality, although it is very affective in communicating even most complex
of human emotions. Therefore, in what ways the ‘non-human’ Internet
technology is used to represent the human? What role design plays in allowing
the ‘non-human’ Internet to mediate and represent the human?
Project Aims
In this project your aim is to examine the dichotomy of the human and the
non-human. You are asked to consider, define and re-evaluate or even challenge
your understanding of the relationship between the human and the non-human
and its interpretation within the Internet and design practice.
Project Task
In groups, examine the role design plays in constructing and mediating the
Internet through the use of such tools as interfaces. Through this process
you are asked to identify, when possible, different types of interfaces that
are currently used to mediate the Internet experience. Try to ascertain, to
what extent design process is involved in conveying the message. In the practical
application of this project, you are asked to develop two sites of 5 pages
that in contrasting ways use the notions of the non-human to represent the
human. The topic of the two sites can act as self-representation or can be
dedicated to represent more general ‘human’ issues. When creating
the pages take into consideration what other actors take part in the communication
of your message. The created web pages should come together to convey the
message.
